Birds are the main attraction of Palo Verde National Park. In the wet season, the Tempisque River floods to form extensive marshes that host migratory birds from the Americas at the beginning of winter. As the dry season (called summer in Costa Rica) progresses from December to May, the marshes are reduced to isolated patches and pools, and the migratory birds leave for their summer nesting sites in temperate climates. Many of the resident tropical bird species nest on a small mangrove island in the Tempisque River. Bird Island is a safe breeding ground for cattle egrets, roseate spoonbills, storks, grey herons, anhingas, great egrets and black-crowned night herons. Other birds that can be seen in the park include white ibis, glossy ibis, black-necked stilt, whistling duck, snail kite, American partridge, shoveler and blue-winged teal. You can see A wide variety of wildlife such as iguanas, crocodiles, monkeys and many species of birds. After a hearty Costa Rican-style lunch, we will visit the Guaitil pottery village, famous throughout Costa Rica and the rest of Central America for its pre-Columbian Chorotega style.
